What Jesus Says About Your Anxiety

Anxiety can make the world feel frightening, uncertain, and completely out of control. In those moments, Christians may wonder whether their fear means they have somehow failed God. However, Catholic faith offers a different perspective: experiencing anxiety does not mean that God has abandoned us. Instead, Scripture shows us that God often meets us precisely in the middle of our storms.

Consider the disciples caught in a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee. They become terrified when they see Jesus walking across the water. Yet Jesus does not condemn them for being afraid. Instead, He comes toward them and says, “It is I; do not be afraid” (Matthew 14:27). In other words, Jesus does not always remove the storm immediately. Rather, He enters into the storm and reminds His disciples that they are not alone.

Likewise, Christianity does not promise a life without suffering, uncertainty, or emotional distress. Instead, Christianity proclaims that God has entered into our suffering through Jesus Christ. The Son of God became truly human, experienced hunger, sorrow, rejection, suffering, and death, and ultimately conquered death through His Resurrection. Therefore, when we suffer, we do not cry out to a distant God who cannot understand us. We turn toward the God who has come near.

Peter’s experience on the water provides another powerful lesson. After Jesus invites him to step out of the boat, Peter walks toward Him. However, once Peter focuses on the wind and waves instead of Jesus, fear overwhelms him and he begins to sink. Consequently, Peter cries out with one of the simplest prayers in Scripture: “Lord, save me!” (Matthew 14:30). Jesus immediately reaches out and takes hold of him.

That short prayer offers an important model for anyone experiencing anxiety. Prayer does not require perfect words or perfect emotional control. Sometimes prayer simply means turning toward God and saying, “Lord, save me.” From there, we can place our fears, questions, and uncertainty into His hands.

Furthermore, the Catholic faith reminds us that we were never meant to face life’s difficulties alone. Christ established the Church as His Body, bringing believers into a spiritual family. Through the Mass, the sacraments, Scripture, prayer, and Christian community, God gives us concrete ways to encounter His grace and receive encouragement from others.

At the same time, seeking professional help for serious anxiety does not represent a failure of faith. God can work through physicians, counselors, therapists, medication, and other legitimate forms of care. Faith and appropriate treatment do not have to compete with one another.

Ultimately, Christian peace does not mean pretending that nothing hurts. Rather, Christian peace means knowing that Christ remains with us even when life hurts. When anxiety turns our attention toward everything we cannot control, prayer redirects our gaze toward the One who holds us.

So, when the storm comes, remember Peter’s prayer: “Lord, save me.” Look toward Christ, remain close to His Church, seek the help you need, and take the next faithful step. The storm may not disappear immediately. Nevertheless, you can face it knowing that Jesus is already there—and He is reaching out His hand.
