How to Pray Without Feeling Weird: A Catholic Guide to Beginning a Prayer Life

If you’re new to prayer, returning to Christianity, or simply wondering how to pray as a Catholic, you may feel awkward at first. However, prayer doesn’t have to feel complicated or intimidating. In fact, the Catholic Church teaches that prayer begins with a simple reality: God already desires you.

God Takes the First Step

First and foremost, Christianity begins with God, not with us. We don’t pray because God has forgotten about us and needs us to get His attention. Instead, God takes the initiative and seeks us first.

We see this immediately in Genesis. After Adam and Eve sin, they hide from God. Yet God calls out:

“Where are you?”
— Genesis 3:9

That question reveals something fundamental about our relationship with God. Even when we hide, God continues to seek us. Therefore, when you desire to pray, recognize that your desire for God already reflects His invitation to draw near to Him.

At the same time, spontaneous prayer matters too. You can speak honestly to God about your fears, hopes, struggles, gratitude, and questions.

Ultimately, both traditional and spontaneous prayer can lead us toward the same goal: communion with God.

Set a Time, Place, and Posture

However, knowing that we should pray doesn’t always mean we actually pray.

That’s why it helps to establish a specific time and place.

Maybe you start with five minutes after watching this video. Perhaps you sit in a particular chair, kneel beside your bed, or visit your parish chapel.

Because we’re embodied human beings, our physical environment can influence how we pray. Consequently, posture can matter too.

Yes, you can pray lying down, sitting, standing, walking, or even while taking a shower. God can hear your prayer anywhere.

Nevertheless, deliberately kneeling or standing can help your body participate in what your soul is doing. The Church has long recognized bodily postures as meaningful expressions of prayer, including kneeling, standing, and prostration.

Begin With the Sign of the Cross

Finally, if you’re wondering where to begin, start with something incredibly simple: the Sign of the Cross.

When you say:

“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

you aren’t merely preparing to pray.

You are praying.

The Sign of the Cross places your entire prayer within the mystery of the Holy Trinity and reminds you of Christ’s Cross, where Jesus conquered sin and death through His sacrificial love.

Therefore, the next time you feel unsure about how to pray, don’t overthink it.

Take a moment.

Speak honestly with God.

Listen.

And remain with Him.

Because prayer isn’t about performing perfectly for a distant God. Instead, prayer begins by responding to the God who is already searching for you, already calling you, and already inviting you into His love.
